Attending the Youth Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Nepal 2024 as a fellow representing Madhesh Province has been a transformative experience for me. Selected from over 150 applicants, this opportunity was a testament to my commitment to fostering meaningful conversations around youth involvement in internet governance and the digital future of Nepal.
The event started with a surge of energy during the registration and networking session. Meeting fellow young leaders from across Nepal, each with unique perspectives on how technology impacts their communities, was incredibly inspiring. From the very beginning, I knew that this forum would open doors to thought-provoking discussions and actionable solutions for the digital challenges we face today.
Opening Plenary: Inspiring Words, Powerful Insights
The opening plenary featured key figures like Amrita Choudhary (APrIGF) and Anja Genjo (NRI Coordinator, UN IGF Secretariat), who shared insights on the evolving landscape of internet governance. Hearing from these experts emphasized the importance of youth in shaping the policies that govern our digital world.
In one of the most engaging sessions, I had the opportunity to ask a question to Mr. Surendra Basnet, Vice Chair of the National Youth Council. I wanted to know how NYC Nepal actively involves youth in the internet policy-making process. His response highlighted the council’s growing initiatives to bring young voices into the policy arena, giving us a platform to contribute our ideas and concerns. This dialogue reinforced the fact that young people are not just passive users of the internet but key stakeholders in its future.
Navigating the Digital Landscape: The Challenges of a Digital Nepal
One of the moments that stood out for me was a conversation with Dr. Dila Sangraula during the closing plenary. I asked about the challenges Nepal faces in realizing its vision of becoming a fully digital nation. Her response was candid, noting that while infrastructure and accessibility are hurdles, the real challenge lies in digital literacy and the equitable distribution of digital resources. As someone passionate about creating inclusive digital spaces, this struck a chord with me.
The discussions on AI governance and misinformation/disinformation were equally eye-opening. We live in an era where technology has the power to transform lives, but with it comes responsibility. The need for sound policies that address the ethical implications of AI, as well as the rising threat of misinformation, is more pressing than ever.
A Platform for Ideas and Innovation
Aside from discussions on policy, I also played a role in exploring the business side of technology. One of the exciting moments was my involvement in discussions around the expansion of the recently launched Jam Jam app, a new digital platform looking to scale across Nepal. This showed me how important innovation is to digital growth and how young entrepreneurs can drive meaningful change.
The forum wasn’t just a platform for conversations; it was a space for action. From lightning talks to roundtable discussions with Members of Parliament, every session brought us closer to understanding how we, as youth, can influence the internet governance space. I walked away with a sense of purpose and responsibility to take what I learned and apply it in my community.
A Call to Action: Youth as Leaders in the Digital Future
As I reflect on my experience, I’m more convinced than ever that youth have a crucial role to play in internet governance. Our voices matter, and forums like Youth IGF Nepal give us the tools and the stage to shape policies that will affect generations to come.
For me, the journey doesn’t end here. I will continue to advocate for inclusive digital policies and encourage more young people from Madhesh Province and beyond to step into the space of internet governance. Together, we can ensure that Nepal’s digital future is one that’s inclusive, ethical, and accessible to all.
Final Thoughts
The Youth IGF Nepal 2024 has been more than just an event—it has been a journey of empowerment, collaboration, and learning. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a transformative experience, and I’m eager to take these insights back to my community. The future is digital, and we, the youth, are ready to lead.
This blog post captures my excitement, insights, and the personal growth I experienced through this remarkable event. I look forward to continuing this journey, working hand in hand with fellow changemakers, to create a digital Nepal that serves everyone.
